The global Single use bioreactors market size is estimated to grow from USD 1.3 billion in 2023 to USD 6.6 billion by 2035, representing a CAGR of 15% during the forecast period 2023-2035.

It is worth mentioning that most of the players (38%) engaged in the development of single-use bioreactor were established before 2001. It is worth mentioning that since 2018, five new companies have entered the domain; examples include (in reverse chronological order of their year of establishment) AUCTEQ Biosystems (2018), Membio (2018), Advanced Process System (2017), Cellexus (2017) and ESCO Aster (2017).

Further, the single-use bioreactor market is currently dominated by the presence of small companies (55%), followed by mid-sized players (32%). It is worth noting that there are some established players in this market with more than 100 years of experience. Examples of such companies offering single-use bioreactors include (in alphabetical order) Corning, Sartorious Stedim Biotech and STAKE multimix.

In fact, majority (83%) of the single-use bioreactors are suitable for mammalian cell cultures. It is worth highlighting that, currently a number of such bioreactors are being used to culture appropriate host cells for studying the pathogenesis of novel coronavirus. This is followed by bioreactors suitable for insect cell cultures (49%) and microbial cell cultures (41%).

Most of the single-use bioreactors support monoclonal antibodies (78%) and vaccines (73%), followed by Single-use  bioreactors that are used to synthesize  recombinant proteins (68%). It is worth mentioning that Cellexus offers single-use bioreactors (4) having capability to synthesize all types of biologic. Further, majority (89%) of the single-use bioreactors are used by biopharmaceuticals / pharmaceutical industries. This is followed by academic / research institutes (47%).

IN ORDER TO EXPAND THEIR SINGLE-USE BIOREACTOR PORTFOLIOS AND GAIN ACCESS TO EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, COMPANIES ARE ACTIVELY ENTERING INTO STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

During our research, we were able to identify partnership / collaboration agreements inked by around by several players engaged in this domain during the time period, 2007-2023.

The number of partnerships in this domain have increased significantly with a CAGR of 15% over the past five years. It is worth mentioning that, since 2021, more than 20 agreements have been signed. Moreover, majority of the deals (13) were inked in 2021, followed by nine agreements that were signed in 2017 and eight agreements that were signed in 2022 and 2020.  Further, eight deals were inked in 2022. Furthermore, most of the partnerships (55%) signed within this domain were inked for stirred tank bioreactor, followed by those signed for pneumatically mixed (17%).

It is evident that majority of the intercontinental, as well as intracontinental partnerships have been signed by players based in North America (24). Further, a considerable share of intracontinental agreements were inked by players based in Europe. Moreover, in terms of intercontinental collaborations, the maximum number of deals (12) were instances wherein a player based in North America entered into an agreement with a company having headquarters in Europe.
